My Family

My family has traveled a great distance to get where we are today. Both of my parents were born in the Philippines during the early 1950s. My mom, Irene, was the fourth child and second daughter of Vicente and Felicita Tolentino, and she was born in Lucena City on September 18, 1950.

She attended Maryknoll Academy for her elementary and secondary schooling, and she went on to receive her bachelor's degree at San Juan de Dios school of nursing. After graduation, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1973 to work as a nurse. It was in Memphis that she met a young man named Camilo Corpuz.

My dad, Camilo, was born in Pottot, which is a barrio in the city of Bauang, La Union, on February 18, 1952. He was the second child and first son of Demetrio and Juanita Corpuz. He went to the local elementary school, and attended private school for his high school years. He finished second in his class and went on to Saint Louis University in Baguio. In 1973, he joined the U.S. Navy and shipped out to the United States. He worked as a jet mechanic and was stationed in Memphis, where he met Irene Tolentino.

My parents got married on December 6, 1975 in Memphis. My dad was stationed at Point Mugu, California, so the two of them moved to the other side of the country to a city called Oxnard. My mom worked at St. John's Regional Medical Center, and my dad eventually got a job there after he left the Navy. I was born at St. John's on December 1, 1977, when my dad was stationed in Antarctica. I was an only child for almost six years until my brother Jordan was born on October 25, 1983.

My parents have been happily married since 1975. In late 2000, they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary by renewing their wedding vows in a church ceremony. They both still work at St. John's Regional Medical Center, and in addition to that they own and operate a laundromat in Oxnard. Jordan is still living at home, but once he leaves for school in the fall, it'll just be the two of them left at home. They are getting a lot of "practice" for their retirement years by doing a lot of traveling around the country. They stay young by going to lots of parties and taking lessons in several different kinds of dancing.
